Plastic Racking for Goods: Which Type to Choose for Warehouses, Which Can Withstand Loads
📅 Aug 31, 2026

Quick answer: For dry warehouses with stationary goods, choose floor liner racks without legs; for warehouses using forklifts, choose types with legs and consider dynamic load rating rather than static load; for granular or powder goods, choose solid surface; for cold storage, food, or export goods, choose virgin plastic. Specifications and price quotes by plastic type are available on the plastic racking for goods page.
What is plastic racking for goods and why every warehouse needs it
Placing goods directly on the warehouse floor is the fastest way to damage them. Cement floors absorb moisture; during humid seasons, water pools form, softening carton bottoms and causing stacks to collapse. Moreover, forklifts cannot insert forks, so moving a pallet requires handling each box individually.
Plastic racking for goods — also called plastic pallets or floor liners in many places — are plastic sheets placed under stacks, raising goods several centimeters to several inches off the floor. A simple plastic sheet solves three problems simultaneously: blocks moisture from the floor, creates gaps for forklift forks, and keeps stacks upright without tilting.
This article explains how to choose the right type based on your goods and warehouse operation, using real specifications of currently sold types.
1. Two main groups: with legs and without legs
This is the first decision, depending on whether the warehouse uses forklifts.
Types without legs are flat sheets about 35 mm thick. They only raise goods off the floor; forklifts cannot insert forks. Suitable when workers handle goods manually or use hand trucks, in small warehouses with narrow aisles.
Types with legs have legs raising the base 100 to 150 mm, creating a gap underneath. Manual or powered forklifts insert forks into this gap to lift the entire stack. If the warehouse has forklifts, this type is mandatory—no exceptions.
In short: warehouses with forklifts choose types with legs; manual handling warehouses can use types without legs, which are sufficient and cheaper.

Specialized type
Oil spill containment plastic pallet

3. Static load and dynamic load: do not confuse these two numbers
This is where many buyers make mistakes.
Static load is the capacity when the rack is stationary on a flat floor. This number is always much higher.
Dynamic load is the capacity when the rack is being moved by a forklift, with goods shaking. At this time, the entire weight is concentrated on the two forklift fork gaps, not evenly distributed across the surface.
Looking at the specifications above shows the difference clearly. The oil spill containment pallet supports 9,920 lbs (4,500 kg) static but only 3,300 lbs (1,500 kg) dynamic—three times difference. The 3-legged grid pallet supports 6,610 lbs (3,000 kg) static but only 2,200 lbs (1,000 kg) dynamic.
Selection rule: if the warehouse uses forklifts, only consider dynamic load. Choosing by static load and then stacking heavy goods on a forklift is how pallets break inside warehouses.
4. Grid surface or solid surface: what is your goods type
These two surface types differ by whether they have drainage holes, which determines what goods can be placed on them.
Choose solid surface when:
Goods are granular, powder, or small pellets that can fall through holes
Dust and debris need to be retained on the surface, not fall to the floor
You want cleaning by wiping the surface to be sufficient
Choose grid surface when:
Goods are cartons, large bags, nothing can fall through holes
Drainage of water or air is needed—cold storage, wet goods, goods requiring ventilation
Warehouse is frequently washed with water, wanting water to flow straight through
You want lighter sheets for easier handling by workers
Granular goods placed on grid surfaces will spill onto the floor, causing cleanup. Conversely, goods needing ventilation placed on solid surfaces will trap moisture underneath.
5. Virgin plastic or recycled plastic
Most rack types offer three grades:
Grade 1 — virgin plastic, blue color. Completely new plastic. Tough, impact resistant, less brittle in cold. Used for cold storage, food industry, export goods.
Grade 2 — recycled plastic, blue color. Previously used plastic ground and re-molded. Durable enough for dry warehouses at normal temperature.
Grade 3 — recycled plastic, black color. Most common grade, lowest price. Used for indoor goods with moderate loads.
For the same design and size, these three grades differ significantly in price. If only storing dry goods indoors, away from sun and rain, and not in cold storage, grade 3 is sufficient. Do not pay virgin plastic prices for what recycled plastic can do.
6. Choose size by container door or racking shelf
Three common sizes and reasons for their popularity:
1000 × 600 mm — small size, suitable for narrow warehouses, tight aisles, light goods. Fits a stack of cartons perfectly.
1200 × 1000 mm — most models in the catalog: cross-shaped pallet, 3-legged grid surface, and cup legs (product pages list 1200 × 1000 or 1000 × 1200 mm).
1200 × 800 mm — standard European pallet size (EUR). If goods are for export, check with the receiver which size they use and choose accordingly.
Safe method: measure the internal dimensions of the racking shelf or container first, allow 2 to 3 cm clearance on each side, then select size. Buying first and discovering a few centimeters difference means repurchasing all.
7. Special case: warehouses with oil or chemicals
If the warehouse stores oil drums, chemical barrels, or solvents, regular racks are insufficient. A single drum leak causes oil to spread on the floor, posing hazards and violating fire safety and environmental regulations.
Oil spill containment plastic pallet 1300 × 1300 × 300 mm is made specifically for this. The removable grid surface sits above a sealed containment compartment. Drums placed on the grid; if leaking, oil flows into the compartment, not onto the floor. After cleaning, reattach the grid surface to continue use.
8. Tips for durable use
Plastic racking lasts many years if used properly. Early damage usually results from these errors:
Overloading beyond dynamic load. Most common mistake. See section 3.
Dragging on cement floor instead of lifting. Bottom surface wears down, legs weaken.
Prolonged sun exposure. UV rays make plastic brittle. Store indoors or under shelter.
Stacking high when empty. Stacking dozens of empty sheets causes the bottom one to bear all weight and warp gradually.
Misaligned forklift forks. Forks must enter the correct gaps; misalignment breaks legs.
Cleaning is simple: spray water, scrub with mild soap, dry. Avoid strong solvents as they dull and weaken plastic.
9. Four questions to answer before ordering
Does the warehouse have forklifts? If yes, choose types with legs; if no, types without legs are sufficient and cheaper.
How heavy is one stack of goods? If forklifts are used, compare with dynamic load; if not, compare with static load.
What type of goods? Granular, powder, or small debris use solid surface; cartons, large bags, or wet goods use grid surface.
Will goods go into containers or racking shelves? If yes, measure first then choose size; do not choose by guesswork.
Answering these four questions narrows down to one or two correct types from the list in section 2.
